20 preschool children hospitalized after mistakenly eating rat poison: Who are responsible?

For most countries in the world and Vietnam, child protection policy is one of the top priorities, aiming to ensure the rights and safety of children.

Food safety in schools is an important issue, with the aim of ensuring the health of students. However, the food safety situation in schools is facing many challenges, especially the origin of food and storage conditions.

Tuoi Tre newspaper reported on November 5 that “20 preschool children hospitalized due to suspected eating rat poison.” The news reported that on the morning of November 5, at Giang Ma Kindergarten, Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province, an incident occurred in the 25-36 month old preschool class, 20 kids may have mistakenly eaten rat poison.

Immediately, the school and the staff of the commune health station quickly took the children to Lai Chau General Hospital for monitoring and treatment. According to the doctor at the provincial general hospital, 2 out of 20 children showed signs of abdominal pain and nausea, suspected of having eaten rat poison. The remaining children were normal and were still being monitored by doctors.

Regarding the cause of the above situation, according to Tuoi Tre newspaper, a representative of the leader of Giang Ma commune, Tam Duong district, said that the rat poison was purchased by a teacher at the school. Accordingly, the previous afternoon, this teacher had peeled it off to use to kill rats in the school’s warehouse. This warehouse has a door connecting to the above mentioned preschool class. However, after using it, the teacher forgot to notify the teachers, leading to the above incident.

The issue of food hygiene and safety is currently a concern and worry for consumers in Vietnam. In particular, food poisoning in schools is on the rise. The recent series of poisoning incidents in Nha Trang city has shown that the food safety situation is at an alarming level.

According to the Ministry of Health, each year in Vietnam there are about 250 to 500 food poisoning incidents, with the number of victims ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 people, and 100 to 200 deaths.

The hospitalization of 20 preschool children due to suspected ingestion of rat poison is considered a serious incident. Public opinion is extremely concerned, especially about the negligence of teachers. This has shown that there are still many problems in schools that need to be addressed. At the same time, it requires the government to take strict measures.

This incident is a big warning for preschool education facilities about the importance of safety and health of children today. At the same time, it requires improvements in state management processes and public awareness.

Ensuring food safety for the whole society in general and in schools in particular is an important issue. In which, the role and responsibility of the Ministry of Health is not small, this is the state management agency responsible for guiding and directing the main implementation.

The issue of ensuring food hygiene and safety is not only important in protecting the health of consumers, but also affects economic and social development.

To end the situation of unsafe food flooding the market, public opinion requires the state agencies to tighten the law and handle it strictly. The law needs to clearly stipulate strong enough penalties for violations, including confiscation, administrative fines or criminal prosecution.
